Talking therapy session taking place in the woods in summer at Cod Beck Reservoir.

Outdoor therapy

Enhance your therapy by moving, breathing, feeling and reflecting in nature. We will explore and make sense of your experiences and help you to develop healthy ways of coping, relating and living.

Who is this approach for?

Are you drawn to being outdoors? Do you have fond memories of being in nature from childhood? Have you noticed the calming effects of being in nature or from being away from the hassles of daily life? Perhaps you feel disconnected from nature and feel this is part of the problem? Or maybe you are put off by the idea of therapy in a traditional setting?

If any of your answers to these questions are yes, therapy outdoors may be worth exploring.

Outdoor therapy location

Codbeck Reservoir, Osmotherley, North York Moors National Park, DL6 3AL.

The location for outdoor therapy is Cod Beck Reservoir. This space offers a range of landscapes and terrains, which enriches the therapeutic work. Here we can sit or explore alongside the river and reservoir, as well as move through woodland, grassland and moorland. We can stay low, with easy access to benches, or climb away from the beaten track.

Free parking on site. Nearest facilities in Osmotherley village. No direct public transport.

Indoor therapy location

Indoor therapy takes place in a cosy rustic lodge in a private garden in Yarm, Stockton-on-Tees.

This secluded clinic welcomes nature in to the therapy space. Here you will sit within a woodland, listening to the calming calls of owls and cuckoos and looking out to the wildlife through the windows.

Whether you choose to take therapy indoors, sit in the garden or enjoy the freedom to explore a hybrid approach (mix indoor and outdoor), nature will be an important part of your therapy.

So you are prepared

To take therapy in to nature, you do not need to be fit, a lover of the outdoors or have lots of gear. We will discuss your individual and accessibility needs to get it right for you.

You will get advice on what to wear (e.g. footwear and clothing) and what you need to bring with you (e.g. sun cream, hat or umbrella).

We will be out in most weathers, as there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing! But in extreme cases we will consider the need to postpone or come indoors.

We will discuss the impact of being outdoors on confidentiality and privacy and make a personal plan to keep you feeling safe and comfortable.
